“WAIT FOR IT”

Anthony Iovino-4-14-06

Then the Lord Replied:  “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.  For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”  (Habakkuk- chapter 2, verse 2 and 3).

The book of Habakkuk is a short book, but delivers a great message and in it, contains many great truths for us to build our lives upon.  One theme of the book is- why does evil prevail and go unpunished?  Why does God not respond to prayer?  Habakkuk is perplexed and confused.  He wants to know why wickedness, strife and oppression were rampant in his country, (Judah) and God did nothing.  He does not understand and goes about questioning the Lord.  The Lord replies with revelation and a message that says,  have faith and be patient.  In the end Habakkuk learns to rest in God’s appointments.

How often do we pray?  I mean, really pray, by getting down on our knees and asking the Lord what His will is for our lives, why evil is so prevalent and why so often it seems that “good people” have to suffer.  All of us struggle with these questions.  Even Pastors and Priests.  We simply cannot understand what God is trying to do.  But, when we come to the Lord in prayer and in faith, His mighty word eventually penetrates our hearts and we are able to give all that troubles us over to Him who is mighty to save.

His word in chapter 2,verse three says- “wait for it”.  Well, Habakkuk ended up waiting about 66 years for the Lord to finally fulfill His word with the destruction of Babylon.  In verse 4, the Lord says, “but the righteous will live by faith”.  (see also- Romans 1:17).  God’s people must wait patiently and live by faith –trusting always in God.  God always fulfills His promises- (see 2:3). Our Lord wants us to talk to Him and petition Him in our prayers.  He wants to hear what is on our hearts, what is troubling us.  He wants to help us.  He wants to save us from Satan and his evil angels.  But we must come to God with all our heart and mind.  We must believe when His word says- “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”, (Romans 10:13), is the truth.  We must confess our sins and ask Jesus into our lives.  Saving us is God’s promise to us, and God always fulfills His promises.

So why do we lack the ability to wait?  We live in a, “I want it now society”.  We do not like waiting long for anything.  We want TV shows on demand, our food- pre cooked and pre packaged, in our fitness, many want a magic pill that will make them fit overnight, giving them the physique of their dreams. What they do not realize is that it takes long hard work in the gym for many years to reach that point and then the rest of their lives training and conditioning so they do not lose what they have worked so many years to attain.  We truly do not like to wait.  Our lives can be great today and in turmoil tomorrow.  We can be stricken with disease or suffer the loss of a job.  What we need is guidance from our creator- Daily!  Reliance on Self is in not an option with God.  We must rely on God’s word and His mighty promises to us.

When Habakkuk finally comes to terms with God’s mighty deeds and His ability to do what He says, he is in awe.  (see Habakkuk 3:16).  In the closing verses of The Book of Habakkuk, he makes an awesome statement of faith.  He says the following“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my savior.  The Sovereign Lord is my strength ; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.  ( Habakkuk 3:17-19).

Where are you right this moment?  Are you sick?  Are you being pulled away from spending time with God?  Are you in prison?  Do you feel alone and isolated?  Do you feel God has abandoned you and does not care?  Are you envious of others?  Are you having marital problems?  Are you unhappy with your weight or your looks?  Friends all of us suffer or know someone who is suffering from the items stated here and many others that are not listed.  The message from our Lord is this:  Wait for it!  He will pick us up from where we are and deliver us, whether in this life or in the life to come.  We will be victorious when we rely on our Lord Jesus Christ with faith.  We can still be joyful, even when trouble and affliction have overtaken us.  Jesus is our strength, He is the one who enables us to go on the heights.  He is the one who makes you sure-footed like a deer.

If you have not made a decision for Christ, please make one now.  Our Lord is ready to fulfill His very great and precious promises to you today.  Make your decision now and wait patiently for God’s Holy Spirit to fill you with joy to be able to stand in anything that our fallen world throws your way.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father- thank you for your mighty word and your very great and precious promises.  Thank you for giving us the assurance that your plans will go forward despite all the evil and affliction we see surrounding us.  Thank you for Jesus Christ, your Son, who lived, died and rose from the dead to defeat Satan and his evil ones.  Thank you for the salvation that is available through faith and belief in Jesus.  Father, I ask that all those who are struggling today with pain and affliction, myself included, will find the strength to bear these afflictions.  The strength that comes only from you.  Father lift us up today and carry us as we go about our lives.  I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus.  Amen.
